Shagun / Money Envelops - A Ritual In India

Ceremonies, festivals and celebrations are an integral part of our life. Shagun is a ritual in India to give cash for the new beginning of life. It is never given in round figure, it always comes with plus one ( Rs 251/ Rs. 501/ Rs. 1001/ etc) because new beginning should start with new opening and not with a round zero.

A few decades back the Shagun in cash was given openly at functions/ ceremonies without an envelope for remembrance of the relative so that they can note down the name/ relation and the amount of gift. but now due to urbanization and industrialization this Shagun is given in a very refined manner through colorful envelops which are self addressed with special packaging according to the occasions like wedding, baby shower etc. A common practice in Indian weddings were people bless the bride and groom with Shagun  in designer envelops.
